Germany’s Surrender Agreement Ending World War II.

Reims, France May 7, 1945

This, the unconditional surrender of the German Third Reich was signed in the early morning hours of Monday, May 7, 1945; the time on the documents is noted as 0241 hours, or 2:41 A.M.  The scene was the war room at SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force), located in the Professional and Technical School at Reims, a historic city in northeastern France that had been almost completely leveled by the Germans during the war.   Across the conference table, representatives of the four Allied Powers —France, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and the United States—faced the three German officers delegated by President Doenitz: Col. Gen. Alfred Jodl, who alone had been authorized to sign the surrender document; Gen. Adm. Hans Georg von Friedeburg, a chief negotiator; and Maj. Friedrich Wilhelm Oxenius, an aide to Jodl. Lt. Gen. Walter Bedell Smith, SHAEF chief of staff, led the Allied delegation as the representative of General Eisenhower, who had refused to meet with the Germans until the surrender had been accomplished.  Other American officers present were Maj. Gen. Harold R. Bull and Gen. Carl Spaatz.   British observers were Adm. Sir Harold Burrough, Lt. Gen. Sir Fred Morgan (SHAEF deputy chief of staff), and Air Marshal J. M. Robb.   Maj. Gen. Ivan Sousloparov, head of the Soviet mission to France, represented the Soviet High Command; he was accompanied by Lt. Ivan Chermiaev and Senior Lt. Col. Ivan Zenkovitch as interpreters. Representing the French chief of staff (Gen. Alphonse Pierre Juin) was Maj. Gen. Francois Sevez.  The more than 44 hours between the signing of the Act of Military Surrender and the cease-fire to take place at 2301 hours, or 11:01 P.M., on May 8 represented a concession to the Germans by SHAEF, one that unintentionally allowed more German troops to be moved westward for surrender to American or British and Commonwealth forces rather than to those of the Soviet Union.   Signers of the surrender document were Col. Gen. Alfred Jodl, on behalf of the German High Command; Lt. Gen. Walter Bedell Smith, representing General Eisenhower; Maj. Gen. Ivan Sousloparov, fulfilling the Big Three agreement that a Soviet representative would take part in any ceremony of total surrender; and Maj. Gen. Francois Sevez, signing as a witness for France.  It is interesting to note that the signature of the French representative was made in the lower margin of the document.  This appears to be the case both on the original, issued to the Supreme Allied Commander, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and on the American, British and Russian national copies. Eisenhower gave his copy to his adjutant from whose estate this extraordinary document was obtained. The National Archives verified this for their records.  The American national copy is now preserved in the National Archives. It has been verbally passed down that the Germans did not consider the French as an equal to the Americans, British and Russians (as they had defeated France)…and thus insisted that their signature not appear, except in the margin.

OWN AN ICON OF US HISTORY

On July 6, 1776, John Hancock signs a truly historic letter to the Assembly of New Hampshire to announce the official adoption of the Declaration of Independence.  This amazing two-sided letter features incredible content as Hancock passionately urges the Assembly to spread the news to the country about it’s new found independence.  Don’t miss this once-in-a lifetime chance to own this historically important letter.

The Original Coin Of The Holy Face…?

                                                      The Coin - 1

                                                      The Coin - 2

I am reaching out to anyone who may have real information that will assist us to further authenticate, and to lend a true story to the origin of this old and rare coin.
.
We have now received other similar in design, but obvious cheap souvenir copies, coins and medallions, from organizations associated in some way to the Vatican and the Holy Face Association, the latter was what some learned experts were telling us, that is what this coin is!
We can now disqualify these medallions and souvenirs as a possible match! However there are obvious similarities in design.
.
.
What seems more plausible, is that variations of medallions and souvenirs were copied  from our coin, or one just like it. Could our Coin be the Originator of what was used to design the “Holy Face” Medallion?
.
.
Sister Maria Pierina de Micheli (1890 – 1945) was the Nun that was granted permission from the Curia in Milan, Italy in 1940, to produce multiples of the medal of the “Holy Face”, and hand them out to Men and Women serving in the Military before heading off to battle, during World War ll.
.
.
A strange and some what confusing issue relating to this coin;
the image of Jesus, used for the “Holy Face” Medallion, said to have been copied from the Photograph taken by “Secondo Pia”, an amateur Photographer, in May 28 1898 of the “Shroud of Turin”, was as previously mentioned, approved by the Curia in Milan in 1940, to be used for the “Holy Face” Medallion.
However Pope Pius Xll who was said to have been given the first “Holy Face” Medallion, did not approve and give his blessing of the “Holy Face” Medallion until 1958, shortly before he died, 18 years after the Medallions were out in circulation!
.
It does appear that a coin(s) like ours, may be held in the Vatican or the Secretariat of State Roman Curia Archives, as we have received paper work from organizations associated with the Vatican and/or the Catholic Church, where there are poorly printed “photo copies” of this coin, but without any written description!
.
We first discovered this coin set into the mast of a Bronze statue of an old Tibetan Fishing Boat.
We have since removed the coin from the statue. We’re not sure why it was put there, either to hide it, in plain sight as it were, or placed there as a decorative after thought?
In my estimation; I find the notion, that the coin was put there as a decoration unlikely, as there would be no need to go to such effort, to mill out a piece of the statue to place a real two-sided coin, when one could simply fashion a one-sided disk with an image of the Holy face, if one wanted to make that design statement!
.
.
We have now been able to validate, that our coin is of a different size and metal, the markings are also different from the look-a-like souvenirs.
.
.
We have also found published works, that talk of Jesus’s time spent in India and Tibet, during the so called
“missing years of Jesus”, the years of Jesus life from 12 to approximately 28 years old. It is also recorded in the India, Tibet region that a coin was struck in his honor!
.
.
Below, is a photograph of the coin set into the sail of the Bronze Alloy statue, of what we now believe to be an old Tibetan Fishing Boat.
                                                                unnamed
This next photograph shows some markings near the Stern of the Statue, that we have as yet, not been able to make out!
                                                     IMG_1456
Our coin and the statue have been given a gentle cleaning.
.
Firstly, it is obvious that someone has gone to great trouble in an attempt to produce similar copies of this coin, to use for their “Holy Face” medallions and souvenirs trinkets!
.
.
We have learned that written Latin changed over time, other languages in the region were also spoken and used in the early years of the first Century, these early languages sometimes shared their properties with each other, some of the languages from the region included: Koine Greek, Hebrew, and a plethora of colloquial Aramaic dialects.
.
.
You will notice many subtle differences; The Medallion is slightly larger than our coin.
A dot under the letter E on our coin, (used in earlier written Latin) and after the words “SUPER” & “nos”, but missing from the Medallion!
 .
 .
It is said the medallion must be worn around ones neck at all times!
I need to state that the coin has no signs that a piece has been removed, that may have once been used to carry a link, to use as a pendant, as seen on the medallion (below right).
                                              IMG_1431
This next photograph, is showing the reverse sides of our coin and the Holy Face Medallion.
.
One will notice the creases around the outside edge of the reverse side of our coin, these marks appear to be left from the process of manually pressing two moulds together.
.
The letters are of a different Font, and possibly from a different time period of Latin, where the letters “n” and “u” are reversed, and most obvious, the 1.0.G.D on our coin, (meaning; “In all things God may be glorified”) and A.M.D.G on the Medallion, and I might add, in an English Font, (meaning; “For the greater glory of God”) also the raised outer band around the reverse side of the Medallion!
                                                IMG_1432
Hear is a photograph of a Souvenir coin, (much larger in size, with a blank reverse side), one can buy online, next to our coin and the Holy Face Medallion.
.
Again there is an obvious similarity, but created and signed by an Artist, (clearly contemporary), also with an “Italy” raised stamp (bottom left)!
                                                  IMG_1440
The image below is of a different Holy Face Medallion, and is also unmistakably another refashioned contemporary copy.
Screen Shot 2015-03-12 at 12.41.38 PM
If our coin was struck in the last Century or so, we would be perplexed, as to why old Latin would have been used with an original coin!
.
.
I am not looking for comments of what people might think or believe, but am hoping to find real information that will help uncover the true story, and origin of this coin, and go to provide authenticity that we can use to verify.

.
.
I’d like to thank you in advance for your time and consideration, if you are able to provide real information to help us in uncovering this coins true story of origin.

Napoleon

His Proclamation of His Accession as Emperor (May 20, 1804)

(Napoleon was named Emperor on May 18th 1804 and his coronation was December 2nd 1804)  The story of Napoleon Bonaparte’s quest to become Emperor is truly fascinating.   The story begins in Egypt in 1798.  Napoleon Bonaparte, already head of the French Army, had proposed occupying Egypt in order to cut off England’s route to India and the source of English wealth.  However, Admiral Nelson, Napoleon’s nemesis, destroyed the French fleet in the Battle of the Nile, confining Napoleon to the African mainland.   An attempt to escape through Syria was turned back by Sir William Sidney Smith and the English army.   Smith sent newspapers to Napoleon, possibly as a joke, an insult or perhaps as propaganda.  The newspapers detailed French losses in Italy and Germany and the chaos in France.   BUT, in the newspapers, the leaders of France were claiming that ‘only a military dictator could save France’.   Rather than becoming disheartened, Napoleon saw an unbelievable opportunity… he could be that military dictator!  He immediately announced his departure for France, abandoning his army in Egypt… in order to “save” the government at home. On arrival in Paris, as Napoleon himself put it; he “found the Crown of France just lying in the gutter”. He “picked it up with the tip of his sword” and (although it took 5 years) it was his. To the Bishop of Versailles, The object of my dearest thoughts has always been the happiness of the French people, and their glory the object of my labors.  Called by Divine Providence and the Constitutions of the Republic to Imperial power, I see in this new order of things nothing but greater means of assuring, within and without, the national power and prosperity.  I take comfort with confidence in the powerful aid of the Almighty.  He will inspire His Ministers to support me by all means within their power.  They will enlighten their people by wise instruction, preaching to them love of duty, obedience to law, and the practice of all the Christian and civil virtues. They will call the blessing of Heaven upon the nation and on the Supreme Head of State…

The Beatles

A very Historically significant letter signed by John, George and Ringo, 18th April 1969, providing documentary evidence of one of the major catalysts behind the disbanding of The Beatles.

The single page typescript letter addressed to Lee Eastman, formally notifying him that he was …not authorized to act or hold yourself out as the attorney [sic] or legal representative of “The Beatles” or of any of the companies which the Beatles own or control.., acknowledging that the three signatories to the letter would co-operate with Mr. Eastman in his capacity as Paul McCartney’s personal lawyer, and instructing Eastman to forward all Beatles associated material he had to ABKCO INDUSTRIES INC. [Allen Klein’s company], signed in red felt pen John Lennon, in blue ballpoint pen Richard Starkey and in brown felt pen George Harrison. Although it is largely thought that the decline of The Beatles as a group began after the unexpected death of Brian Epstein in 1967, it was the realization in 1969 that Apple was in financial chaos and hemorrhaging The Beatles money away, that spurred Lennon and McCartney in particular to look for a firm hand to take over the management of The Beatles’ affairs. Lennon arranged to see Allen Klein whom he’d initially heard about through Brian Epstein and then via his friends The Rolling Stones whose business affairs Klein managed. In 1970 in his famous interview with Jann Wenner, Lennon described how he engineered the situation, which enabled him to get Klein involved with The Beatles:I maneuver people. That’s what leaders do. I sit and make situations in which it’s a benefit to me with other people…I had to do a job to get Allen into Apple…I…[created] a situation around Apple and the Beatles in which Allen could come in. He wouldn’t have got in unless I’d done it…. Once John had opted for Klein to manage him, George and Ringo followed suit. Paul however was opposed to Klein and proposed instead, his partner Linda’s music lawyer father Lee Eastman, and her brother John. John, George and Ringo considered that the Eastman’s’ close association with McCartney would bias the balance of The Beatles’ partnership in McCartney’s favor and things became acrimonious resulting in a three against one division formalized by the document in this lot. Allen Klein and Lee Eastman’s inability to even attempt to co-operate with one another for the good of The Beatles succeeded in broadening the division between the two opposing factors within the group even further. By this stage in 1969 The Beatles were all going in different musical directions, and as Ringo recalled …The enthusiasm was just waning…It was like the wind-down to a divorce. A divorce doesn’t just happen suddenly; there are months and years of misery until you finally say ‘Oh, let’s end it.’ The Beatles’ partnership was finally dissolved in court just under five years later on January 9th, 1975.

Coleman Hawkin’s Tenor Sax

A dealer in musical instruments in England received a call from a man in Derby. He had a Selmer saxophone to sell. He explained he had bought it locally to learn how to play but found it far too difficult. It was a Selmer “radio improved” model from the 1930’s. It had extremely unusual engraving on it. Engraved on the bell of the sax is a country scene with a cottage, tree, fence, etc. The name COLEMAN HAWKIN’S was engraved on the front. The fellow selling it said that it had belonged to the grandfather of the family he bought it from, who died. He told them that the sax belonged to someone very famous, but they didn’t really understand what he was talking about.  The dealer bought it & came home. He was intrigued enough to write to the owner of the Selmer Company in France, Patrick Selmer, to see if he could find out more about it. Selmer replied saying that his records showed that it was manufactured in September 1933, sent to the U.S. in November, and sent to the Selmer shop in London ca. March 1934. Several months after the dealer bought the sax, the American clarinet player Kenny Davern was touring in England. He met with him, knowing that he had tremendous knowledge of instruments, told him about the sax & its highly unusual engraving, but didn’t mention Coleman Hawkins. Davern said “Hey, that looks like Hawkins’ sax, & the dealer then told him that it had Hawkins’ name engraved on it. The next day, the dealer went to a local library & found a book entitled Stomping The Blues, by Albert Murray, in which there was a photo of Hawkins, taken in 1935, with the sax laying across his lap & the serial # was readable with a magnifying glass. Frank Driggs, a major jazz photographer, took the photo. The dealer went home, called Driggs, told him about the sax, & asked him if he could confirm the serial # by looking at the negative. This he did. He also sent the dealer a nice large copy of the photo. The next question was “How did Hawkins’ sax end up in Derby, England? This was answered some months later when a musician friend of the dealer was out playing a gig in York. At the end of it, an elderly gentleman came up to him and told him that he was in the band that accompanied Hawkins when he played York in 1939 & that Hawkins had sold his sax to another member of the band for 75 pounds, because he had a new sax awaiting him on his return to America. A friend of the dealer’s checked the Musician Union’s records & discovered that the guy whom Hawkins had sold the sax to lived in York, but had moved to Derby & had died six months before the dealer bought it An excellent supposition is that the sax was presented to Hawkins in March 1934, when he began his tour, by the owner of the Selmer shop in London, Ben Davis. The dealer showed the sax to many jazz notables including John Chilton, Hawkins’ biographer, who sent him lots of newspaper clippings of Hawkins with the instrument. The sax was originally gold plated since Hawkins believed it made the sound more mellow; most of the gold plate is now missing. The sax’s serial # is 18190.

  1. Hello,

I would like to ask if the tenor saxophone Cigar Cutter / Radio Improved serial 18190 is for sale or you want to swap with the antique violins or a major Viennese piano, thanks Alessandro

  2. Dear Alessandro,
I’m afraid the Tenor Sax has been sold! However if you are looking for something, and we can be of assistance in locating something for you, please let me know.

    Kindest Regards.

    Adrian

  3. Good morning Adrian,

thank you very much for the information.

I ask if you can have contact with the owner to propose a collaboration for a possible museum exhibition in major museums in Italy ….

Time ago I contacted the owner of New York, but the asking price was too high for me.
Unless the owner is not always him (at the moment I do not remember the name I have to check emails, meaning if you want to send your name and email address for comparison).

    Best Regards, Alessandro

  4. Hi Alessandro,
I will look into who bought the Sax, and make an enquiry for you.
    I’ll let you know when/if I get a response.

    All the best.

    Adrian
